A coming of age story, Koren Zailckas writes with a bit of a spin from the normal teenage life. Koren’s autobiography is one of her life and her relationship with alcohol. From her first sip in middle school, to her last as a college graduate, Koren allowed alcohol to control her life. An extremely descriptive writing style makes each moment, each uncomfortable situation, each sip a journey for the reader. Smashed shows how everything can be taken away from a girl, and simply because of her alcohol abuse. One of the unique traits of Smashed is its noninvasive tones of feminism. Anybody who is ignorant to the aspects of sexism sees them alive and well in Koren’s firsthand accounts. Korens’s story paints a bleak picture, but its one all of us should listen to-as a warning.
