When Breath Becomes Air is a recent novel written by Paul Kalanithi. This novel is a New York Times Best Seller and is a great read for young adults and adults alike. Paul wrote this book as a memoir after he was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. Writing was always something he had a passion for, but he chose to pursue neurosurgery as his career. Paul was an excellent surgeon and neuroscientists. He passed away last year toward the end of writing his book, but he is survived by his wife, Lucy, and daughter, Cady. The first part of his book is an introduction of himself explaining how he go to be an excellent neurosurgeon. The second part is about how he took the news of his diagnosis and how he chose to live the rest of his life, which sadlly wasn’t as long as anybody would want.
Paul had much valuable information to share with all of his readers. He wanted to tell everyone what he has learned from his unique situation of being both a doctor and patient. He realized after this experience that no doctor ever knows what their patients are acctually going through, because well, how could they? This book allows the reader to follow Paul on his journey through this extremely difficult time. It’s extremley personal and there is a good chance it will have you in tears by the end. It’s such a stong and powerful book and it’s very well written all the way until the end. It certainly exceeeded my expectations!
